The evolution of watch technology has undergone several revolutions, from mechanical watches to automatic watches, then quartz watches, and more recently, connected watches incorporating blockchain and cryptocurrency technologies. This report aims to trace the development of these different technologies and explore their impact on the watch industry.

1. Automatic Watches

History and Functioning Automatic watches were developed in the early 20th century and operate through a rotor that uses wrist movement to wind the mainspring. This innovation eliminated the need for manual winding and improved the autonomy of mechanical watches. Recent Advances Advancements in materials, such as the use of silicon for the escapement, have improved the precision and durability of automatic watches. Additionally, some luxury brands integrate innovations like balance oscillators without a hairspring, reducing the impact of magnetic fields.

2. Quartz Watches

Emergence and Revolution The introduction of quartz movement in the 1970s marked a turning point in the watch industry. Functioning through the vibrations of a quartz crystal powered by a battery, these watches offer much greater precision than mechanical watches while being more affordable. Technological Improvements Over time, quartz watches have benefited from various improvements, including: Extended battery life through low-energy consumption technologies. The introduction of hybrid systems combining quartz and mechanical movement to maintain a traditional aesthetic while offering better autonomy. The development of solar-powered watches, reducing reliance on conventional batteries.

3. The Rise of Crypto and Blockchain Watches

Watches Integrating Blockchain Recently, some watch brands have started incorporating blockchain technology into their models for various applications, such as: Authentication and traceability of luxury watches, helping to combat counterfeiting. Secure recording of purchase and resale transactions. Watches and Cryptocurrency Payments Some connected watches now allow cryptocurrency payments via integrated NFC chips, facilitating secure and anonymous transactions.
